Trump II, Day 50

50 days into Donald Trump's second administration.  What's most noteworthy today?

  • In less than two months in office, Trump has killed the stock market rally that had been going on for years.  The Dow Jones is down almost 7% from its peak on Jan 28; the S&P 500 is down more than 8-1/2%, and the Nasdaq is down over 13%.  If this is an indicator of the broader economy, it is going sour more quickly than under any new president in modern history.
  • The air war between Ukraine and Russia is intensifying.  Two civilians were killed on Moscow last night in what that city's "mayor called the largest on Russia’s capital since the war began."  Meanwhile, in Ukraine, more than 100 civilians have been killed by Russian strikes since the United States ended satellite intelligence sharing and stopped US weapons supplies to Ukraine.  Both of these represent a significant increase in death and destruction in the war.  It makes me think that beyond simply not caring what happens to Ukraine, as Vance has said, this administration actually wants Putin's Russia to kill more Ukrainian civilians.  Is this what Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov was referring to when he said on March 2 that the Trump administration's foreign policy "largely aligns with our vision"?
